from the romney side right now. that is not what they need. what the romney side needs is that they still have to persuade people that governor romney is the guy they should vote for. at the national level, that means they need to fix whatever has gone so wrong with their campaign message and they need to stop doing whatever it is that has turned so many people off to their candidate. when you ask voters whether they like this mitt romney guy, the answer is a very, very plain answer. no. his favorable ratings are in the low 40s. almost 10 points lower than the ratings for president obama. lower, even, than the famously unpopular former president george w. bush right now. swing state voters say they do not think that mitt romney cares about the needs and problems of people like them. some of mr. romney's numbers are just shockingly bad. i mean double check. shockingly bad. look at the percentage of swing state voters who say mitt romney's policies will favor the middle class. in florida it's 8%. in ohio it's 9%. in pennsylvania it's 9%. whatever the romney campaign has done to get th

president obama leading mitt romney right now by nine points. the other big home state newspaper poll was from the des moines register. according to that poll, the des moines register poll in iowa, president obama is leading by four points. there are a ton of national tracking polls out today. and spoiler alert, they all show president obama ahead by a few points. in terms of the senate races, that same columbus poll out of ohio that shows president obama ahead it shows sherrod brown leading by ten points. heading into the elizabeth warren and scot brown debate in massachusetts, we'll be talking about that in a moment, there's a new poll out today in massachusetts that has elizabeth warren over scott brown by two. in pennsylvania, a newspaper poll released over the weekend put the democrat in that race bob casey ahead of his republican challenger by eight points. as mitt romney's, shall we say, second place standing starts to look like more and more of a permanent residence as it seems like a long shot for winning the presidency, the down ticket effect of that is starting to become a

want to have to start over. there's this perception. so that to me is a tricky thing for romney. right romney has got to sort of make the case that we're not going to rip everything out by the roots. which is of course what some in this space do want to have happen. but i'm going to create a better recovery. a faster recovery. so i think that's what the 8% means, right? it means he's got to be more nuanced in that argument. where the president can sit there and make the same case -- do you really want to start over? >> there's another point that for the wealthy, life has been pretty good over the last several years, the stock market has doubled, ceo pay is way up. the long-term unemployed, and those jobs that were lost under the bush administration, that president obama has restored in manufacturing and the like, the key number for them is, who do i trust. to take my long-term unemployment needs, my middle class families' needs, to the next level. so i think that the combination of people just trusting president obama more, if you're middle class, and that he has delivered on what he said he

doing phenomenally well. mitt romney is right, his class -- it's something that warren buffett -- i love the warren buffett likes to say. yes, there is a class war in america, and my class is winning, so that's true. so why are these guys who are winning so mad? i think there are a couple of reasons. the first is i think we tend to overlook how isolated they are from everybody else. they really just don't see. that amount of money means you live, especially in this globalized economy, in a completely different universe, and, you know, in this sort of dress down age, in this very sort of culturally democratic age, i think we sometimes overlook really how big that gap is and, you know, occasionally when we come across it, we're all sort of startled. i think that's been a problem for mitt romney when he sort of mentions the things which are everyday in his life. i'll bet you $10,000 for this, of course i have an elevator in my house for my cars. suddenly we're all startled because we understand they live in a totally different world. i think the second thing, and i do think this is a k

campaign you're less worried about romney's numbers right now. on the one hand the 40% right direction is the highest it has been in 3 1/2 years and any incumbent heading in that is momentum. 53% say the country is headed in the wrong track. i think this for the president is not about mitt romney. those advantages, chuck, on china, foreign policy and the deficit aren't as strong as for usual republicans. and the final point i would make is i think the important thing for this election is that braump has a 52 positive, 42 negative image. mitt romney has a negative image. only two have had a net negative image at this point and one of them loss, george h.w. bush and romney needs to improve that dynamic. >> democratic pollster. thank you very much to both of you. we have to get back in the field. let's keep poling. just two days away from friday's jobs report. we will get a quick preview on wall street on the market run down. and then we are taking a trip down memory lane. the good, bad and awkward from past debates. why the moments still matter today and are lessons to both tonight. >>>
